Getting around

Public transport in Athens, simplified.

The metro does most of the heavy lifting. Buses fill the gaps. Airport routes are easy once you know the names.

Metro: your default option

The metro is clean, fast and predictable. If you’re staying central, it’s usually the best first move.

  • Line 2 (red) and Line 3 (blue) cover most visitor/student needs.
  • Use it to connect neighborhoods quickly without taxi roulette.
  • For official updates, check STASY / OASA (schedules can change).

Buses & trolleys: fill the gaps

Great for cross‑town routes and places not served by metro.

  • Look up routes live (Google Maps is usually fine, but confirm with OASA when it matters).
  • Keep a bit of patience at peak hours — traffic is real.
  • Validate your ticket when required (avoid fines).

Airport connections

Three common options, depending on time and budget.

  • Metro Line 3 (fastest when running).
  • Express buses (24/7 in many cases; good when metro isn’t).
  • Taxi (fixed fares may apply — confirm before you go).
Tip: if you arrive very late, an express bus can be the calmest solution.

Tickets (what actually matters)

  • Buy from metro station machines or kiosks.
  • Keep your ticket/card accessible — checks happen.
  • If you’re staying longer, consider multi‑day or monthly options.

Official sources: OASA (buses/trolleys) and STASY (metro/tram). Prices and schedules can change.

Want the short version?

If you’re unsure: use the metro first. Then buses. Then taxi only when it’s actually worth it.

Airport to city (quick choices)

Metro

Fast and predictable. Great if you’re travelling light and want the simplest line-based route.

Bus

Cheapest option. Best late at night, but can be slower depending on traffic.

Taxi

Best for groups or heavy luggage. Confirm the route and keep your drop-off pin ready.

Tickets & apps

Ticket rule

Validate when required and keep the ticket until exit. It’s boring, but fines are worse.

Navigation

Use live transit times + walking routes. Athens detours are common around worksites.

Port & ferries

If you’re heading to Piraeus, buffer time. Port areas can be confusing on your first try.
